Work Description

Your work will involve working in a multi-disciplinary team finding and exploiting different vulnerabilities within the embedded hardware and software of the different vehicles in the market, as well as on existing and proposed protocols. Your work will also involve proposing and implementing countermeasures and ways to correct them.


Your core tasks will involve, but are not limited to:
• Analyzing current in-car computer and networking technology to great detail in order to find vulnerabilities and other potential problems (privacy issues, etc.). This will include interacting with different embedded devices, finding accesses to them, possibly performing SCA or FI or variants, and reverse-engineering them.
• Perform a similar analysis with over-the-air vehicle-related protocols (V2X, 4G, 5G). This will involve reverse-engineering communications, as well as emulating them using SDR.
• Implement well known attacks both on embedded systems and communications systems.
• Improving state-of-the-art attacks using additional techniques, as Machine Learning.
• Helping other colleagues to design and implement tools to extract and analyze low-level information from vehicles to better understand their functioning.
• Keeping up-to-date a deep understanding of the current vehicle ecosystem to find potential problems with security and privacy.
• Examining potential privacy threats and finding ways to counter them.
• Presenting your work both internally and potentially, also in conferences.


What we expect

Required experience / knowledge / skills
• Bachelor in Computer Science, Electronics, Industrial Engineering, Telecommunications or Mathematics.
• Pen-testing of embedded platforms, including reverse-engineering embedded HW/SW, both regular and protected/obfuscated, for different platforms (x86, ARM, etc.).
• Hands-on experience with analyzing and reverse-engineering communication protocols. Interaction with them using SDR.
• Proven knowledge of electronic design and microcontrollers.
• Proven knowledge of Cryptography: ciphers, protocols, usage of PKIs.
• Experience analyzing infotainment systems (QNX), Android Auto and Apple CarPlay.
• Experience with pen-testing Linux and Android.
• Interest in learning about out-of-vehicle communication: V2V, V2I, 4G/5G, as well as ADAS and other driver assistance technologies (parking assistance, etc.)
• Programming: Python.
• Strong ethics.
• Far from a checkmark attitude. Having a make-do, problem-solving attitude.


Advantageous
• MSc or PhD in Cyber Security.
• Knowledge of tamper-resistant protection methods.
• Experience with SW protection mechanisms.
• Experience with the design of vehicle embedded systems.
• Knowledge of car-backend communications.
• Cryptanalysis knowledge: SCA, FI, template attacks, etc.
• Research publications / public projects.
